Audio Interview Critique

The first interview I listened to was one by Otis Garrison on Sarah who is an Ag major at the University of Wyoming. I thought Otis did a great job on his interview. It was very clear and sounded smooth. There wasn’t any background noises that could be distracting. It was easy to hear what Sarah had to say. His cuts and edits ended up being very clean and transitioned well with what she was saying. The only critical advise I have for Otis is to end the interview with something different.  I didn’t think the interview would end where it did but other than that he did a great job.

The second audio interview I listened to was that of Jasper Fitzgerald. She interviewed Bridget Wilson from Cheyenne. I thought her interview was very well put together, I enjoyed listening to it because she seems like a sociable person. Most of Jasper’s cuts and edits were clean but a couple of them in the beginning could have been cut better. I could hear a couple of glitches but it got better as the audio piece went. Overall, I think she did a good job on her audio piece and I enjoyed listening to it.

Personally, I’ve learned a lot from this assignment. I know that audio editing isn’t the easiest of things so being prepared before any type of interview is essential. Having a room where ambient noises aren’t going to distract the interview are key to having a good interview. Giving the interviewee time to answer questions and think about what they want to say is helpful too. As for the editing goes, learning the simple tools are very important. I would have been very confused on where to even start if I didn’t take a few minutes to figure out what I was doing and how the program worked.

Interview Final

This audio editing stuff can be pretty confusing but once you get some of the tools down it becomes much easier to edit audio pieces. I’ve never had to edit an audio piece like this before so this was all new to me. I think I did a pretty good job of editing my piece of audio. The only problem I had was when it came to converting the file to a MP3. I was able to convert and save the file as an MP3 but when I went to soundcloud.com to upload it, it wouldn’t read the MP3 file so I had to keep it as a big WAV file. I enjoyed figuring out which pieces of audio would make the cut but I was frustrated when I could not upload to file as an MP3. The thing that surprised me most was how easy it is to edit audio and all the ways you can change the pitch of a voice or clear out ambient noises. I think for the most part everything in my interview went well and the audio editing was pretty easy. I’m interested to see how an individual would edit something that contains background noises. It would be difficult to cut that kind of stuff out but with these types of audio editing, it seems that you can make any audio piece a little clearer. There are a ton of cool features that I wasn’t able to use but I could see if you don’t know the basics of the program it becomes difficult to do anything else. I’m surprised by the new programs and how easy it is to edit pieces of audio right from home. I’m glad I was introduced to this type of work because I think it will only help me in the future. I’m excited to see what other programs and types of journalism we will learn next.

5 Good Minutes

Overall, I thought the interview with Andrew went as smooth as it could have gone. I’ve never had to do a sit down interview with anyone before so this was a first for me. I learned that stating questions clearly really helps in the interview. Having a silent room and having the recording device a proper amount of inches away helps. We were able to grab a study room in COE library on campus and that seemed to help with getting rid of the ambient noises that usually float through a room. We took a few minutes to set up and go over some of the questions we would be asking so we wouldn’t be caught off-guard. I couldn’t imagine going into an interview and being asked something I wouldn’t want to be asked and wouldn’t answer.

I actually enjoyed doing the interview and thought it was a fun way to learn about somebody. I think that everything in our interview went according to plan but if I had to do anything different, it would of been to give myself a couple more second after he answered the question to ask another one. I enjoyed getting quality answers that I didn’t think I would get. I figured if I found a subject that is interesting to me and the interviewee, the whole process would be easier. Andrew was easily able to answer the questions I had laid out for him because the subject at hand related to him. Sometimes I could feel myself getting stuck in certain spots but would know what to say while he was answering a question because he would bring up something new or interesting that I’d want to find out more about. There are many factors that can ruin an interview and the whole experience and knowing those factors beforehand helps. I think that viewers of this audio will be happy with this piece.
